Italy vs Kenya | Highlights | Women’s Volleyball Olympic Qualifying Tournament 2019

Catania, Italy, August 2, 2019 – Italy defeated Kenya 3-0 (25-17, 25-10, 25-14) on the opening day of Pool F at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic qualifiers to stay on track for an anticipated showdown with the Netherlands on Sunday.

Lucia Bosetti, Italy: “The match against Belgium is going to be totally different. Today we reached a very big result: I don’t think we did our best, but it was important for us to start in a good way. This first match was a good ice-breaker. We know that Belgium and the Netherlands are totally different from Kenya, they are more trained and prepared and they are going to fight more. The Italian audience has helped a lot during the whole game and I’m sure that they are going to help us even more during the next matches.”

Davide Mazzanti (Italy head coach): “Tonight I saw an Italy that has adapted to its opponents during the first set. Then we got rid of the initial tension and we showed some of the things we can do, but we didn’t show everything. When you play a match like this against Kenya, you don’t have to fight with high speed, so you can be more careful not to make mistakes. As the level increases, the quality of our job rises. With the difficulty, girls’ performance will also improve. Belgium and the Netherlands are two well organised teams, we will have to be careful. The Netherlands is the one we know better, and I can say that today I saw nothing new.”

Ramdoo Shailen Dev (Kenya head coach): “We started the match in a good way, but we did unnecessary mistakes. I’m happy about the beginning, but the second set wasn’t what we normally do, so we’re hoping to correct that. My job is not only to create results, but also to create the future and I’m happy with a few individuals, for example Sharon Chepchumba Kiprono has been in the national team just for five months.”

Mercy Moim (Kenya captain): “I think today’s match was good. In the first set we played our best, but during the second one we lost our concentration. However, I’m happy that my team has played against Italy because Italy is the best team in Europe so far… We played our best but luck wasn’t on our side.”
