Catania, Italy, August
2, 2019 – The Netherlands beat Belgium 3-0 (20-25, 15-25, 22-25) to stay
on track in the race for a ticket to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
Jamie Morrison (the Netherlands head coach): “I think it’s a good start for us. We had some good elements and some bad, so hopefully we’ll learn from them. We’ll get the chance to go out and to fix some things tomorrow against Kenya and then we’ll see what happens. I think that at the end of the first set and during the second we started to play for it, so that was my favourite part.”
Maret Balkestein-Grothues (the Netherlands captain): “I think we played a pretty decent match. I think that overall we were the dominating side so for the first match of the tournment we can be happy. I really liked the spirit that the team had on the court. I liked the joy and the passion. My wish for us is that we win, that we’ll get this Olympic ticket!”
Ilka Van De Vyver (Belgium captain): “We need to keep the level. The enthusiasm and the drive was really good. I think that’s one of our base topics: we have to play, we need to build, we can progress even in this tournament. It will not be easy, because everybody knows that Italy is a really good team. So we will try to make it as difficult as we can for them tomorrow.”
Gert Vande Broek (Belgium head coach): “The match was good for much moments, but we also had moments with many individual mistakes. Right now, we don’t have the rythm of the VNL, but we have three weeks for the start of the European championship. We will be okay in three weeks, I’m sure of this. Today we had ups and downs. I think the first set we started well and we did good changes. During the match we improved and we were close to the level of the VNL”.
